Now you may be thinking what in the world is Nomato. Well we have had to come about this dish due to finding out that Daddy is allergic to tomato. I know out of everything – tomato! Being Asian this is a big deal as a majority of our dishes include well you guessed it – the magic ingredient. So we were in a bit of a conundrum as I needed to find a substitute and quick.

Rummaging through the internet, we found Nomato (sauce without tomato) but it was only being sold in America. This is where I came upon Kristy Sayer-Jones Southern In Law website where she had her own recipe for this base. After trying out her simple recipe I personally found it a bit sweet for savoury dishes, so following her directions I added 3 celery sticks into the mix and cooked them at the same time I added the onions. This lessened the sweet flavour and was perfect for the base sauce for pretty much everything I used tomatoes for. A bonus to this sauce is that as it is packed with lots of vegetables it is very filling even on its own. Not only that but Z is getting tonnes of nutrients from every dish she eats without even knowing it.

When it came to weaning Mr A, I have to say it wasn’t as exciting as weaning Z. Even though he had a massive interest at 4 months he didn’t wean till 6 as well as this at first he didn’t eat as much because he always wanted his milk. Z was a happy baby that enjoyed everything from avocado to broccoli but this little monster wasn’t having any of it. We did work out that he loves Banana Porridge – well actually porridge full stop. Baby rice is out of the window as he finds it too gloopy so now we have to mix everything… and I mean everything home-made into porridge (this even includes dinner).

After experimenting with his taste buds, we have started to mix different vegetables together to see if he fancies them as he has tried a couple of Ella’s pouches and has enjoyed them a lot. Nomato sauce is a great addition to his weaning buds. When I make it fresh I take a few spoons out and keep it on the side for him. Also as I only add salt and spices when I make a dish rather than in the sauce itself, it is perfect for his body. I create this dish following the Southern In Law recipe and then add 3 spoons into his creamy porridge and mix. This can be added to baby rice as well if your little one enjoys that or even baby pasta puréed to the correct texture.

Here is original recipe for you all to enjoy:

2 small onions – diced
3 sticks celery – sliced
4 garlic cloves – crushed
1 tbsp butter/oil (I personally use Oil)
4 large carrots, peeled and chopped in chunks
3/4 of butternut squash or pumpkin – peeled and cubed (so far we have only used squash and it is amazing)
2 medium beetroots or 4 small pre-prepared ones – peeled and sliced
1 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable stock
salt and pepper to taste (I leave this out so Mr A can eat it and instead add when cooking a full meal)

  • Dice the onion and celery, crush the garlic.
  • In a large non-stick saucepan, sauté your onions, celery and garlic in butter/oil until soft and translucent, add a splash of water to stop them from sticking.
  • Add all the other ingredients into the mix to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook with the cover on till carrots are softened.
  • Once soft, place in blender till you reach your desired consistency. (At this point, season as desired)
  • Use immediately, store in a glass jar and place in fridge use within a week or freeze in little packs and use as required.

I have to say an indirect thanks to Daddy, as without his allergy we would never have stumbled across a great recipe like this that the entire family can enjoy together. On a side note, I now feel guilty enjoying fresh tomatoes on my own…
